MERCURY-FREE DENTISTRY

In 1991, the World Health Organization announced that the largest source of mercury to which the general public is exposed to, outside of industrial sources, is from silver fillings. Mercury, even in very small quantities, is more poisonous than lead, arsenic and cadmium.

Scientific studies have shown that silver fillings are always releasing mercury gas. Science has also confirmed that the mercury gas released by the fillings is breathed into the lungs where 80% to 100% of this gas is absorbed into the body and the bloodstream.

Given these facts, we at the Dessureault Dental Health Centre decided in 1987 to no longer use mercury fillings.

The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology is an international group of doctors, dentists and researchers, who established a protocol to protect patients and dental staff when drilling a filling. The following precautions are considered the bare minimum:

  1. use dental dam and quick suction during drilling
  2. abundant use of spray water during drilling
  3. cutting the filling into sections instead of pulverizing it with the drill
  4. thorough rinsing of the mouth and instruments after removing the filling.
Moreover, especially for patients with mercury-related symptoms, we strongly recommend taking the following precautions:
  1. a complete medical
  2. specific dietary supplement
  3. use of an air ionizer and/or purifier in the operating room
  4. pure air source on the patient’s nose during drilling
These precautions are to minimize mercury gas absorption by the patient during and after drilling. Without these steps, the amount of gas absorbed could be harmful.

For our patients’ and employees’ well-being, we follow this protocol. As well, we work closely with specialists (physicians, naturopaths, homeopaths) to protect you.
